Alappuzha, “Venice of the east”, is one of the most important tourist destination in the state. Achankovil, Pamba and Manimala are the main rivers. The Kayamkulam Lake covers an area of 59.57sq.kms. and extends into Alappuzha and Kollam districts and the Vembanad lake covers an area of 204sq.kms. stretches from Alappuzha to Kochi. These lakes are used for the inland water transport of cargo and passengers. Alappuzha is strongly connected by waterways to various other parts of Kerala, including, Kumarakom, the famous tourist destination. Holiday packages on the houseboats, traditional Kettuvalloms, are an out-of-this-world experience at Alleppey.

Alappuzha is also an important exporting centre of coconut oil, areca nut, cardamom, sugar and pepper etc. Mullackal Rajarajeswari temple is located at the heart of Alleppey town.
The presiding deity is Goddess Rajarajeswari. Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, Haripad,the beautiful temple dedicated to the King of Serpents is located near Haripad on the Alleppey-Quilon route on a panoramic site of thick green forest measuring about 16 acres . It is a place of worship visited by large number of devotees from all over India. The Latin Catholic Church, is one of the oldest churches, which has now been renovated and given a face lift. It is situated near Kannan Varkey Bridge, Alappuzha. St.Andrew’s Forane Church at Arthunkal, one of the sacred churches in Kerala, attracts lakhs of devotees both Christians and non-Christians every year from all parts of the State.

At his instance a competition of Snake-Boats was held in December 1952. Enthralled by the exciting experience of speed, rhythm, artistry and festivity on the glittering waters, Panditji declared an Ever-Rolling Trophy and suggested that the boat race be conducted every year as an Annual feature of native cultural festivity
